“Mirror”-Poem & Analysis

What’s a mirror?
A piece of glass, reflecting light and image,
nice and rigid decorated frame is quite exquisite.
Usually posted on selected walls in vertical viewing,
as it connects with all humans, daily for personal grooming.
Whether peaceful state, stressed or on a verge of insanity
let’s utilize mirrors without the purpose of vanity.
Self imagery- observing it gradually,
hypnotized by physical reflection
but notice we rarely focus on spiritual connection
Personal assessment-
a necessary act and ritual
sometimes the ego overcast and help to mask the visual.
This task is critical to steer our heads right
some afraid and run for shade,
whenever truth appears to shed light.
We tend to psychoanalyze others-
but when do we spin directions of a mirror,
and begin to question our imperfections?
Love to win affection from a list of good deeds-
but rarely took heed to regulating reoccurring flaws.
Constructively criticized, we feel offense-
friends reveal events of our errors, as we conceal contempt
Internal temperature get real intense,
in this case it must be proof
we embrace pretty lies, but can’t face an ugly truth.

Analysis on "Mirror"

In summary, the poem uses the metaphor of a mirror to explore the themes of self-reflection, introspection, self-awareness, and personal growth. It encourages the reader to go beyond the surface level and embrace both the physical and spiritual dimensions of self, while also acknowledging the challenges that come with facing one’s own imperfections and truths. However, it acknowledges that this process can sometimes be difficult due to the ego’s tendency to mask or ignore certain aspects of our own reflection.

The poem further explores how people tend to analyze and judge others, yet they often hesitate to turn that critical gaze inward. The poet questions why people are willing to evaluate the imperfections of others but struggle to confront their own shortcomings. It’s suggested that seeking external validation through good deeds is common, but addressing and rectifying recurring flaws is often neglected.

Through various experiences, the notion of appearances being misleading has been substantiated. Thus, I am delineating that contemplating our self-image should be recognized as a meditative practice, emphasizing one’s character over mere physical attributes. Whether attributed to parental guidance or environmental influences during our upbringing, the passage of time enables us to grow and transform incrementally. As a result, we ought to consciously acknowledge the type of person we become as individuals.

Due to legitimate concerns, it’s quite customary for parents to oversee the television programs and online engagements of their children. This vigilance is crucial to safeguard their wholesome growth and deter the assimilation of detrimental behaviors or patterns, given the potential exposure to explicit violence, sexual material, and unsuitable language. Comparably, crafting a persona is akin to shaping clay, guiding it toward its eventual form. Given our innate tendency for habitual behaviors, cultivating self-awareness becomes imperative before the clay sets in its definitive structure. Hence, what more effective approach exists to oversee and regulate our habits, traits, and imperfections than through self-assessment?

                                                                                                               Constructive Criticism

Constructive criticism is another significant aspect of personal growth. Feedback from friends and loved ones can provide valuable insights into our behavior and help us address any toxic patterns or areas for improvement. Challenges arise when pride and ego can sometimes make it difficult for us to acknowledge and accept criticism, regardless of how it is presented. Sometimes, even well-intentioned concerns may be misconstrued as insults, triggering a defensive response.

This can be attributed to a lack of practice in self-assessment, as accountability might feel like a foreign language or a personal attack. Continuous validation and a constant need for our egos to be stroked can indeed foster resistance towards constructive criticism. When we are accustomed to praise or when we are not accustomed to reflecting on our own actions and behaviors, it can be challenging to embrace feedback that challenges our self-perception.

To overcome this resistance, it is important to cultivate self-reflection and develop a growth mindset. This involves being open to feedback, actively seeking opportunities for self-improvement, and recognizing that constructive criticism can be a catalyst for personal development. By practicing self-assessment, accepting feedback with humility, and viewing constructive criticism as an opportunity for growth rather than an attack on our identity, we can foster a healthier approach to personal development and create stronger relationships based on trust and mutual support.

                                                                                                                              Moderation

Although I periodically schedule self assessment, I must highlight the importance of moderation to avoid generating self-doubt. Overthinking and excessive self-criticism can indeed create problems that may not even exist, leading to unnecessary stress and negative self-perception. Maintaining a balance between self-assessment and self-appreciation, recognizing both weaknesses and strengths, allows for a holistic understanding of oneself and an essential aspect of personal growth. It allows individuals to build on their talents and take them to advanced levels. Understanding your strengths can provide a sense of confidence and purpose, enabling you to excel in various areas of your life.

Being that my zodiac sign is Cancer, perceiving sensitivity as a strength is a great example of embracing and harnessing personal characteristics. I learned that sensitivity can indeed be a valuable trait, as it allows for empathy and a deeper understanding of others’ emotions and experiences. This empathy can facilitate meaningful connections and the ability to provide support and assistance to those in need.

In addition to recognizing strengths and embracing sensitivity, focusing on finding solutions rather than dwelling on problems is an effective approach. By channeling emotions and directing them towards problem-solving, I can cultivate a proactive mindset that seeks positive outcomes and growth. This approach empowers me to address challenges constructively and find creative solutions.
